What should you do?
Get Medical Help. If you have any injuries, get medical attention. If you are having any difficulty with sleep loss, post-traumatic stress, nightmares, mental difficulty, trouble concentrating, inability to work/focus at work, you should consider seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist for assistance.
Report the assault/abuse. If it occurred at work, report it. If appropriate, report it to the police. Or, even if you do not feel quite ready to report it, you may want to contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline: https://www.rainn.org/ (It is confidential).
Preserve any evidence. If this involved an assault by a co-worker or someone you know, this might include messages, texts, emails.
Keep in mind, depending on what happened, there are two types of cases. Criminal Cases, which involve a crime and are prosecuted through the criminal court system. These would start typically with you reporting the crime to the police. A prosecutor, often through the District Attorney’s Office in the County in Pennsylvania where it happened would determine whether on not to charge the person who did this (the “defendant”).
However, regardless of whether there’s a criminal case, you may have the right to bring a “civil” case. If the sexual assault happened through work, or by someone working for a company that puts them into contact with you, you may have a civil “tort” claim.
Such a claim for damages could include: lost wages, lost earning capacity, pain and suffering, medical expenses, and “loss of consortium” (loss of companionship) with your spouse. If the assault happened at work,
You should act promptly. In civil cases or criminal cases, there are deadlines and timelines which must be followed, so it is important to obtain legal counsel as soon as possible. The application of the various types of statutes of limitations (which set time deadlines for bringing a lawsuit) can be legally complex.
